Man, this topic just keeps coming up this week! Friends, family, and stangers…all feeling stuck. “I’m not where I’m supposed to be.” “I don’t know what to do.” “I’m stuck.” Normal feelings. But what are they telling us? And more importantly, what do we do about them?
First…get quiet. That’s my go-to answer. It’s the only way I’ve found to really hear and interpret what the feeling of stuckness is trying to tell me. Get quiet. Listen. Feel. What is my intuition, my gut, my heart trying to say? As a rule, I believe we’ve gotten away from really listening to our hearts and paying attention to the signs around us. Sometimes we know, deep deep down inside what we want to do and where we want to be, or what we don’t want to do and where we don’t want to be. But following that feeling or moving toward that deep knowledge is scary. Really scary.
Most times we take the safe bet. We keep doing what we’re doing. We stay where we are. Even with the restlessness and stuck feelings, there’s a comfort in the known. A safety in doing the same things we’ve always done.
But what if we’re sick and tired of feeling stuck…whatever stuck means for us?
Once we’ve gotten quiet and heard what our heart really wants, even if it’s just a change of scenery, we have to set an intention. Wherever we want to be or whatever we want to do, we have to be able to see ourself there. See ourself doing that thing. Make a plan in our mind and visualize it. See it. Hear it. Smell it. Taste it. And most of all…FEEL IT.
Not just thinking about it. Really setting the intention for it to happen. Believing that we can. Seeing ourself already there, in scene. It sounds simple and you may think you already do this. But I challenge you to go deeper. Go there in your mind. See the thing. See the plan. Memorize the plan. Go over it again and again. Visualize yourself taking the steps. See it. Be it.
Then we have to ACT. This is the difference in thinking it and making it happen. So many dreams and intentions and plans never make it out of our heads. They stay there. They’re safe there. They die there. Once we make that decision and set that intention, we have to do something about it.
We have to move in that direction. For me, this usually means writing it down and making sure I take some action on it daily. Something I can see and measure. Want to write a book…I have to write. Want to move to a new city…I have to research neighborhoods and find a job and a home. Want to change careers…I have to find the job I really want and put in that application or get that interview. Something, anything that moves me forward.
This is the scary part…and usually the sticking point. What if it doesn’t go well? What if my book sucks? What if I don’t get the new job? What if they don’t like me? What if? What if?
Be willing to GROW. We have to be ready for success…or failure…and welcome either. We have to recognize the opportunity for growth that comes with both. Opportunity being the key word here. If we fail, we have an opportunity to learn from the process. What worked? What didn’t work? How did I succeed? Why didn’t I reach my ultimate goal? Did my goal or dream change during the process?
Or we can quit? Return to the status quo? Run from the lessons and the process. Miss what they were trying to teach us? This was often the answer for me and for many of you, I’m guessing. It’s just easier.
We CAN succeed. We CAN grow.
After many leaps of faith, failure doesn’t scare me anymore. I’ve learned that anything is possible. I don’t let failure, or more importantly, fear of failure keep me from my dreams. It’s all possible. Anything. Everything.
I just have to do something about it. YOU just have to do something about it!
Big Love to you all!
